“Lawdawgs Can’t
Avoid Eagle Talons”
Final Game a
loss 28-44
October 28th, Garretson, South
Dakota – There was no question about the
caliber of this opponent looking at the history of the Kane County
franchise, the only question was, would the upstart Lawdawgs prove they
belonged with the big boys? The game started out with responding no,
however the Lawdawgs would not let the 0-14 1st quarter score
do them in. “We have been in that position before. Everyone stayed
focused and we just dug in a little deeper” pointed out Coach Taylor.
The Lawdawgs answered when Phil Wilson ran 17 yards and ran over a few
Eagles on the way, answering both the Eagles scores and their taunting.
“I was surprised the Eagles were talkers, I didn’t think they did that.
We needed to show we are for real” commented Phil Wilson. The Eagles
were not impressed and scored putting the scoreboard up 21 to 7. The
Eagles then scored again, this time a field goal to push the lead to
24-7. Christensen held tight in the pocket as the Lawdawgs went 5 wide
and hit Johnny Bentley across the middle for a 65 yard touchdown. The
Eagles would continue their great field position on punt and kick
returns, returning this kick across mid field as well. The Lawdawgs
defense stiffened for once and then gave up a half back pass for a
touchdown on 3rd and 15. The Eagles flexed the score up to
31 to 14, however the Lawdawgs would not quit. Unlike the Eagles, each
of the Lawdawgs scoring drives were 65 plus yards and the Lawdawgs drove
75 yards to finish up the half with a Phil Wilson 1 yard run on 4th
and goal. Wilson was again running over defenders on the way. Half
time score was 21 to 30.
Fred Mitchell recorded 7 solo
tackles and 5 assists to stand out almost alone on defense. The
Lawdawgs defensive unit uncharacteristically could not stop the run.
The Eagles mustered 5 rushing touchdowns, a field goal and their 6th
score was a 25 yard touchdown return of an interception. That was the
dagger that came after the Eagles marched right down and scored on their
opening possession of the 2nd half. After the interception
return the score was 21 to 44. The Lawdawgs defense would then do their
part with 10 minutes remaining in the 3rd and hold the Eagles
off the score board including a possession that started inside the
Lawdawgs 30 when the team went for it on 4th down.
Christensen would hit Klein at the end of the 3rd quarter to
cut the lead to 28-44. Although that would be it for the scoring the
Lawdawgs would have a drive turned over on downs in the red zone and the
final possession for the Dawgs was picked in the end zone.
“It took us too long to adjust to
their size and speed. Offensively we mustered 324 yards against a super
tough opponent, and defensively we have a lot of work to do” observed
Coach Taylor. The team finished their season with a 13-2 record, the
best in franchise history and shows no sign of slowing down. “2007 is
already in the works! We have some holes to fill, but a great group
returning, and some good recruits in the wings. We are definitely
getting ready for another great year” points out Coach T.
The Lawdawgs are looking forward to
the league’s planned realignment to give us a stronger “regular season”
schedule that will prepare them better for the post season. Plans are
tentative to again play the Kansas City Shockers and perhaps some of the
other regional tough teams during the regular season. The team hopes to
have a 14 game regular season and play teams that are of new quality or
improved quality.

Players of the week honors
October
21st, Wauna, Washington:
-- CENTRAL REGION -- Perhaps the reason why you have not seen the
Lawdawgs players dotting the “Central” region weekly honors for the past
two months would be due to inactivity. However, the Lawdawgs make the
most of their opportunities and post honors after their 54 to 16
pounding of the Cass County Renegades.
QB-Corey Christensen, Dakota Lawdawgs (NAFL). The Lawdawgs
advanced to the next round of the NAFL playoffs with a 54-16 win over

interceptions.
Fullback- Johnny Bentley,
Dakota Lawdawgs (NAFL). Johnny rushed 13 times for 116 yards as well as

ground making that the 4th300 plus yard rushing night of the
season.
The Lawdawgs will have to work hard
and will have their hands full, if they want to post more “Players of
the Week” with the next opponent. Both of the teams that play tonight,
for the right to play the Lawdawgs in the 4th round, are
tough. The Pittsburgh Colts will host the Kane County Eagles tonight at

AF Top 25
says
Lawdawgs #15 in Nation
October
19th, Minneapolis, Minnesota: – There are 3
major ranking systems in the Minor League ranks. The Lawdawgs have
moved up this week in the American Top 25 Poll to #15. It has been a
slower climb in the AFT25 as this poll counts in a team’s history not
just their overall record for this season. With a tough opponent like
Kane County being #6 in the AFT25 or the Pittsburgh Colts (UR) looming
in the distance, the rankings will no doubt change as teams continue to
push for national titles over the coming weeks. “Any time you put
nationally ranked teams against each other you get a good evaluation on
who’s who and what’s what. We know that our next game will be a tough
opponent either way” says Coach Taylor.
The Lawdawgs are off this weekend and
await the winner of the Kane County Eagles and the Pittsburgh Colts this
weekend.
Cannonburg, Pa- The Pittsburgh
Colts have been getting better each year for the last six years,
bringing on better talent and going further and further each year in the
NAFL playoff structure. The Colts (10-3) seeded #3 in the Northern
Conference have made it to the regional final game for the second year
in a row. Yet again, they will face the #4 seeded Kane County Eagles
(12-2). The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Big Mac
Stadium in Canonsburg, PA. The Eagles, the 2003 NAFL Champs, beat the Colts 48-14 in 2005 in
Aurora, Illinois. The Eagles have
beaten the #6 Columbus Fire (7-3) in the first round 22-7, and then beat
their division champions and #1 seeded Hoosier Hurricanes (9-2) 20-6.
The Colts on the other side beat the #5 seeded New Castle Thunder
(13-3), and this past weekend traveled to face the #2 seeded Michigan
Admirals (9-1) beating them 17-10.
One might note that the Michigan
Admirals bounced the Lawdawgs from the NAFL2 playoffs last year 28-0.
These are without question tougher teams than the Lawdawgs have faced to
this point. The Kane County Eagles are ranked nationally in all three
polls. In the
American Football Top 25 they are #6, in the
National Football Events they are #12 in nation and #2 in region and
in the
Minor League Football News they are #15 in nation and #2 in Region.
The Pittsburgh Colts are not ranked in any poll which often signifies a
falling from grace with the poll voters, as the Pittsburgh Colts are a
good team. Everyone is expecting an Eagles triumph; however the Colts
are looking for respect.
The Lawdawgs remain at #12 in the
Minor League Football News top 40 this week as well as #1 in the Central
Region. The National Football Events poll has the Lawdawgs unranked
nationally and ranked #7 in the Central Region.

“Divisional Playoff Champs”
Lawdawgs clip Renegades
54-14
October
16th, Garretson, South Dakota – Next step Regional
Championship. The long awaited second round game looked to be a blow
out, got testy and then became a blow out again as the Lawdawgs improved
to 13-1. The Lawdawgs showed rust and a lack luster effort at times in
the 1st half perhaps due to their annoyance of Cass County
showing up late, forcing the game to start over an hour late. The first
two drives ended in a punt and then a fumble before the Dawgs got things
rolling. Christensen connected with tight end Dave Peterson on a 65
yard touchdown pass (xpt. by Pete Peterson good) to go up 7-0 midway
through the 1st quarter on the 3rd drive of the
game. Tyler Trees would cap off a 10 play drive with a 1 yard plunge to
put the Lawdawgs up 13-0( xpt. blocked) on the teams next possession.
The next two Lawdawg drives would stall and two big plays one on each of
the Renegades next two possessions would but the Renegades up 16 to
13. Not impressed by the teams performance to that point Coach Taylor
let the team know of his disapproval. “We didn’t get this far by
playing selfish and not respecting our opponent” Coach Taylor pointed
out “We jumped up on them and then relaxed, not something I would
advice against any opponent”.
That would be it for the Renegades
who’s other plays that night did not fair quite as well as those two
did. Quarterback Chuck Wright for Cass County was sacked 5 times but
was hurried or punished on every passing attempt. Renegade drives did
not last long as the defense did their job and stat chasers were again
disappointed. However Fred Mitchell nearly fully recovered from an
injury, posted big numbers with 6 tackles and 2.5 sacks with 3 of those
tackles being for losses. Lon Nelson had a huge game with 6 tackles as
well adding 2 fumble recoveries. His first fumble recovery was returned
14 yards for a touchdown just seconds after Lawdawgs running back Willie
Farris but the Lawdawgs back up to stay for good with a 15 yard run (xpt
no good Dawgs 19 Renegades 16). Nelsons’ recovery put the Lawdawgs up
26 to 16 (xpt by Pete Peterson good) and the Lawdawgs would not look
back. Seconds before the half Christensen threw his 2nd
touchdown of the night to James Augustus on a short passing play (xpt.
Pete Peterson good) taking the lead to 17 points at the half, Lawdawgs
33, Renegades 16.
Christensen would hit Ricardo Sorrel
on a 23 yard touchdown pass to open the 2nd half scoring for
the Lawdawgs (xpt good Pete Peterson) pushing the Lawdawgs to 40 to
16. Although the next drive would stall and force a punt the defense
would not allow the Lawdawgs offense back on the field forcing a fumble
that Brandon Thompson would scoop up and take 32 yards to the end zone (xpt
Pete Peterson good) 47-16. Thompson also grabbed 7 tackles and forced a
fumble as well. Deric Stahl how had a great night with 7 tackles forced
a fumble on the Renegades 2nd to last drive giving the
Lawdawgs a chance to pile more on or run out the clock. The Lawdawgs
attempted only 3 passes in the 2nd half a including the
Sorrel touchdown reception and nine for the game, Christensen finished
the night going 5-9 with 3 touchdown passes and no interceptions
compiling 126 yards (two of his passes were dropped). The Lawdawgs
spent the final 8 plus minutes chewing up the clock on a 11 play 73 yard
drive. James Augustus and Danny Cannon took turns raking in the yards
and Augustus delivered the punishing block that opened the hole to allow
Cannon to dodge into the end zone to finish the nights scoring at 54-0
with Peterson punching in the extra point.
The final play for Cass County was
smothered for a loss ending the night and the season for the Renegades.
In a game that was expected to be a win the Lawdawgs ended up satisfied
for the most part on the teams, performance. The half time motivational
speech echoed unity and striving for respect and the team responded in
earnest. The Lawdawgs dynamic duo of Phil Wilson (16 carries for 108
yards) and Johnny Bentley (13 for 116 yards) didn’t muster a score
however they did lead the way for a 50 attempt night in which 3 of they
other 7 ball carries did punch in scores while compiling 306 yards.
This would mark the 4th time the team eclipsed the 300 yard
rushing mark this season. Coupled with the passing attacks 126 the
Lawdawgs mounted 432 yards of total yards and 8 different Lawdawgs
scored touchdowns.
The Lawdawgs will be off this week
and await the winner of the Kane County Eagles (11-2) ranked as high as
#7 in some polls will travel to and face the unranked Pittsburgh Colts
(11-2) on the 14th. The winner will be 12-2 and head to
South Dakota to take on the 13-1 Lawdawgs on the 28th of
October. Last years’ playoff game between the Colts and Eagles was
close at the half 14-7 Eagles, before the Eagles opened up in end of the
third quarter winning 48-14.

“Lawdawgs move to #12 in the Nation,
Remain #1 in the Central”
October
10th, Wauna, Washington:
– This weekend will mark the 2nd round of the NAFL playoffs
which finds the Lawdawgs awaiting the “improved” Lincoln Renegades.
However good news could be heard from Lawdawgs camp this week as the
franchise moved up to #12 in the Nation and remain at #1 in the
Central. Then “Minor League Football News” has followed the Lawdawgs
season with a watchful eye and has deemed them worthy of this ranking.
The Lawdawgs are also ranked #18 in the American top 25 Poll.
This weekends’ game will be a
measuring tool for the Lawdawgs, taking on the Renegades again after a
two week layoff the team is sure to be rusty. In addition the last time
these two teams face each other the Renegades used that to their
advantage and jumped up 14-0 before the Lawdawgs poured on 40 unanswered
points. The games are always fierce and competitive except for the 2nd
half of the last meeting, and the Lawdawgs have much to lose with their
national gains by losing to the Renegades. No doubt the visiting team
will be looking to knock of the Dawgs from their high horse and send the
Lawdawgs home for the year.
The Lawdawgs will be hosting media
night again this Wednesday night from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at the Lawdawgs
practice facility at the Sioux Empire Fair grounds. All local media
outlets are invited to attend and get a peek at what the “national” fuss
is all about. This weekends game will be held in Garretson, South
Dakota and game time is 7:05pm.

Not “Jackin”
Around”
Part II
Sept 7th, 2006 Sioux Falls, South Dakota–
It’s not every day that you sign the leading tackler from a DI school,
so when Tyler Trees mentioned that his best friend and the SDSU’s 2005
leading tackler wanted to discuss playing with the Lawdawgs it did not
take much though set up a meeting. Like he never left the field Billy
Kirch has been switching back and forth with Owen Sandine (NSU) for the
Lawdawgs leading tackler this season. While a tremendous football
player Billy has his eye on coaching football and is currently persuing
that passion as a grad assistant with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits
as you read this.
Although
the Lawdawgs have been making due with Kirch coaching at SDSU, his
presence is definitely missed. Kirch has an excellent nose for the
ball and is quick fast and a great tackler. No doubt Kirch is busy
coaching up SDSU linebackers and breaking down film as the SDSU
Jackrabbits have now won 2 straight and are flying high!
While with the
Lawdawgs this season Billy has played outstanding fighting back and
forth win Owen Sandine for team tackles leader and supplying bruising
blocks from the teams jumbo set and carrying the ball at times.
Currently Billy has compiled 51 total tackles (despite missing 3 games)
along with 4.5 sacks and an interception. In addition he’s carried the
ball on offense 4 times for 23 yards with a touchdown, not many carries
but most of the work is done when he’s blocking for Trees and company
form the Lawdawgs jumbo set.
A few weeks back,
Billy Kirch and Tyler Trees took a few minutes out of their schedules to
talk with the Lawdawgs team newspaper to answer a few questions.
Lawdawg Leader:
Billy tough game last night with the Jacks, how do you think the rest of
the season will pan out for SDSU!
Kirch:
It was a tough loss to swallow, but hopefully we'll bounce back next
week when we face a much better team in Montana!
Lawdawg Leader:
Montana better than this last opponent? What did you see on film
today!?
Kirch:
Obviously Montana is going to be a much better team than Wisconsin-LaCrosse,
they have a talented QB and and a veteran group coming back on Defense,
we'll prepare for them just like we prepare for any other team, we'll
show up on Saturday prepared and
expecting
to win!
Lawdawg Leader:
How do you like being a coach?
Kirch:
I love the game of football, i've been lucky enough to have played and
I'm looking forward to the next step and teaching the game to kids and
helping them reach their goals and dreams of playing football.
Lawdawg Leader:
What are your responsibilities as a graduate assistant?
Kirch:
I work with the LB's as well as coordinating the offensive scout team, i
help with game preparation by breaking down our opponents film
Lawdawg Leader:
How far do you see yourself going as a football coach?
Kirch:
Whatever God has in mind for me!
Lawdawg Leader:
That goes without say, but don't you have a goal of your own as far as
what level?
Kirch:
right now, I could see myself as a high school of college football
coach.
Lawdawg Leader:
This years been a good one for the Lawdawgs so far what were your
expectations coming into this season with the Dawgs?!
Kirch:
I wanted to have fun playing football again and win games!
Lawdawg Leader:
Well you’re doing that, are you having fun so far?
Kirch:
yeah its been fun, especially with the success we've had.
Lawdawg Leader:
With your career and school responsibilities you’ve missed a few games
hard to see your buddy Trees mopping it up with your new friends while
your gone?
Kirch:
No, im happy for the success they've been having.
Lawdawg Leader:
Give us a comparison, I mean you did play D1 for the Jacks (South Dakota
State University) what was that like and is this similar in anyway?
Kirch:
Overall,
at the D1 level, there is an obvious speed, size and athleticism
difference, at all positions…..whereas in this league you don’t see it
as much of that overall “team talent”...there's still great athletes and
players out here though and I’m sure we have not faced the best out
there yet.
Lawdawg Leader:
Coach Taylor says there's tougher teams out there then the ones you've
faced, think so?!
Kirch:
Yeah, he thinks its true, If we're only ranked #30...then there's
probably 29 better teams! Lol, but seriously we can’t be worried about
that we just have to prepare and be ready for our next opponent!
Lawdawg Leader:
What do you miss most about college football?
Kirch:
The atmosphere of Saturday afternoons and playing with all the life-long
friends i made.
Lawdawg Leader:
Do you get any of that feel here with the Lawdawgs and what do you like
most about playing for the "Dawgs"
Kirch:
I
love putting on the armor and playing the most violent game in the
world, its fun playing side by side with guys who share a love for the
game
Lawdawg
Leader:
So your playing on the Lawdawgs during your 4 years at state, this team
beat any of the jacks opponnents and if so who?
Kirch:
I would say prolly not.
Lawdawg Leader:
Toughest opponent so far?
Kirch:
Cedar Valley Vikings.
Lawdawg Leader:
I
see you’ve carried the ball a few times, how is that for ya!
Kirch:
I like it when the ball is in my hands.
Lawdawg Leader:
Who’s
the better ball carrier, you or Mr. TD over there?
Kirch:
Me
Lawdawg Leader:
How
bout tackler who rates supreme there!?
Kirch:
me
Lawdawg Leader:
So
tell us, what are the teams chances as you see it so far, are we going
to get booted in the first round like the "Dawgs" have the past three
years?
Kirch:no
we're not, we got players and coaches that now what it takes to win and
we will step it up in big games'
Lawdawg Leader:
Yes
speaking of which Tell us about the coaching staff what are they like?
Kirch:
They love what they do and want the best for the playeres and the
organization
Lawdawg Leader:
How
about off the field do you like what the team is doing in the community?
Kirch:
yes they are big advocaters of giving back to the community, not taking
things for granted.
Lawdawg Leader:
We've
covered alot, anything we missed? Anything you want to say about the
team that I didn't ask you?
Kirch:
I think we have a great group of guys that are striving for greatness on
the field and in life too!
Lawdawg Leader:
one
final question, where is your focus now?!
Kirch:
Lincoln.
DAWGS WIN!
CLINCH HOME FIELD
THROUGHOUT PLAYOFFS
September 25th, Garretson,
South Dakota – In what was expected to be a tougher contest, the
Lawdawgs beat the visiting Norfolk Thunderbirds 27 to 8. The Iowa
Bruisers were expected to show up and give the Lawdawgs a test before
the playoffs however the Bruisers had other ideas and folded this week.
The Norfolk Thunderbirds agreed to fill in, however with their season
already over the pickings were small and they had a rough time gathering
the troops. The intentions of the coaching staff were to rest players
anyway if they could and luck would have it that they would be able to
do just that.
Sitting 6 starters would not slow the
offense down as they marched right down and scored to open the game 7 –
0 with the Peterson extra point. Christensen hit the 1st of
2 touchdown passes on the night this one a 27 yard pass to James
Augustus. After getting the ball right back on a turnover, Coach Taylor
began to sub immediately, leaving Christensen in but changing the backs
and receivers. The short drive would grind to a halt and Peterson would
chip in a 20 yard field goal putting the Lawdawgs up 10-0. Another
turnover would get the Lawdawgs the ball back again in the next few
minutes and drive into scoring territory and come up empty this time.
Throughout the 2nd and 3rd
quarters, 2nd string QB, Austin Ingalls, would move the ball
with Cannon, Farris, Trees, Heumiller and Hendriks. “I think we did
well considering those groups don’t get a chance to work together very
often. We had hoped that vs. the actual Bruisers we could get out early
and sub, so this worked out kind of the same.” says Coach Taylor. Not a
lot of pop from the Dawgs on either side of the ball, no doubt due to
change in opponent, however the 2nd and 3rd units
mustered a field goal in the 3rd putting the Lawdawgs up 13
to 0. With reinforcements arriving at halftime for the Bruisers the
sledding was a little tougher in the 3rd. As planned the 1st
units went in for a few drives in the 4th quarter to finish
on a good note and they did. Christensen would end up 6-6 on the night
for 106 yards and two touchdowns, the 2nd of which was a 36
yard toss to Antuan Bloom in the 4th to put the Lawdawgs up
20 to 0. The opponent would post a touchdown pass late in the 4th
with the Lawdawgs sitting in their base defense and working on coverage,
playing reserves which was to be expected. “We are never too concerned
about the score in our games provided we are playing the best we can.”
commented Coach Taylor. “We want to win and play well. The guys on the
field were learning to work together and work on adjustments.”
Johnny Bentley would get 11 carries
and muster 75 yards while James Augustus showed why he will be a big
part of the playoff run with 8 carries for 61 yards and a touchdown that
finished the scoring for the night at 27-8 Lawdawgs. In all, 11
different Lawdawgs carried the ball mustering 243 yards with leading
rusher Phil Wilson not taking any carries for the Dawgs.
Cortland Wittenhagen (6 tackles) and
Bret Gabert (6 tackles and a sack) would have great games, while Matt
Schmidt and Nick Hauert would both intercept passes. It was hard for
stat chaser to get in on the action with all the subbing that Defensive
coordinator Coach Broda was doing, however the point was to get everyone
out there and get the win and the Lawdawgs accomplished that. “We are
not a team that chases points on offense or shutouts on defense
especially in this case when clear of the outcome, I doubt it will hurt
us in the rankings but if it does then such is life.” Comments coach
Taylor “I think that being respectful to your opponent is higher on the
list, we’ve been there before ourselves.”
“I think we made the most of a
difficult situation. It was hard to get the guys up and focused
tonight.” Says Coach T. No doubt that will not be a problem as the
Lawdawgs eye either the Midwest Pioneers or the Central Minnesota
Thunderbirds. These two teams will square off in the MFL championship
this weekend. The winner will host and face the Lincoln Renegades in
the 1st round of the NAFL playoffs on the 7th of
October. It is expected that either of these two powerhouse teams would
more than likely eliminate the Renegades and then travel to play the
waiting Lawdawgs on the 14th of October in Garretson. Game
time will be 7:05pm. Make sure to stay posted to the team website for
updates at
www.lawdawgs.net.
Wednesday
night will be media night and the Lawdawgs welcome all media outlets to
attend practice at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds. Media is welcome from
5:30 pm to 7:30pm. For more information on the Dakota Lawdawgs or the
NAFL please e-mail the team at

LAWDAWGS EARN #13 NATIONAL MLFN
RANKING
# 1 IN CENTRAL REGION
September 22nd, Wauna,
Washington: – Be careful what you wish for would be the
word of advice as the Lawdawgs have found themselves ranked #13 in the
country and #1 in the Central Region. That will put immediate pressure
on the Lawdawgs as national attention from other minor league teams,
organizations, fans and players will be watching to see what the
Lawdawgs are all about. In the past, other Sioux Falls area teams have
gained local exposure and national glances but not at the level of what
the Lawdawgs are achieving now. “As I mentioned on the news last night,
when you take a hard look at our roster it’s not hard to explain why we
are doing so well” explains Coach Taylor. The 11 year coach for the
Lawdawgs has seen many great players come and go, however this year’s
roster is a little different.
“Every year I think you look back and say,
what if I we would have had all that talent, from that year’s overall
roster, on the field at one time. We have not accomplished that
goal either this year, however it’s the closest we’ve been” comments
Coach Taylor on his roster players.
Moving up in the polls will bring a
target on to the backs of these lawmen as the Lawdawgs take to the field
on the 23rd vs. the Bruisers. With a victory Saturday night
the Lawdawgs would secure home field advantage throughout the NAFL1
Playoffs and invitations to participate in prestigious post season
tournaments and bowls have began to trickle in. If the Bruisers fail to
hit their mark the Mid American Region Division championships will bring
in a tough foe that is looking to knock the Lawdawgs block off. “We are
squarely focused on the Brusiers, I think our players will be surprised
at their improvements. If you’re asking me if those teams, that we
might face us in the 2nd round, respect us…I would have to
say no!” says Coach T.
Well hopefully the Lawdawgs can
continue their success this weekend and push their dream deep into the
NAFL playoffs. This weekend’s game will begin at 7:05pm in Garretson,
SD. The Minor League Football teams Rankings are listed below.

LAWDAWGS 2 BACK ATTACK
HONORED BY MLFN

September 22nd, Wauna,
Washington: – As the Lawdawgs search to find their
“national” identity and begin to break through locally, the honors keep
coming in for the 11-1 North Central Division Champion and it’s
players. This week Phil Wilson and Johnny Bentley were honored after
the Lawdawgs 40 to 14 victory vs. the Cass Country Renegades. The
Lawdawgs have long been known to be a bruising running team and have
often had good fullbacks and halfbacks. This year the team was
fortunate to land both in the same backfield at the same time.
Phil Wilson who is in his 8th
and perhaps final minor league season has found himself in the
unfamiliar role as a leader at times. The team has pushed each of it’s
veterans to step up, on and off the field. However, on the field Phil
has continued to do what he does best, run over defenders. The 6’2, 260
pound halfback has long been the one two punch with long time friend Ray
Wilson and the two would split time. This year Ray Wilson has moved to
corner and is doing an excellent job and Phil Wilson has stepped up
commitment has allowed him to handle the #1 spot all by himself. “It’s
not about the yards. It’s all about the wins. 2 carries or 20 as long
as we win I’m happy” says Phil Wilson. In the past Phil would find
himself the only weapon in the Lawdawgs arsenal, however with the strong
and accurate Corey Christensen directing the offense coupled with a
great fullback like Bentley and a staple of talented receivers, the
running game has blossomed like never before. “We’ve always had the
talent here and there, but this year we’ve put it all together. I’m
most impressed with the Offensive Line, when you look up you see this
moving wall and you can get behind them and do your thing” comments
Wilson. The offensive line has helped generate huge rushing games to
this point most recently the 338 yard output vs. the Cass County
Renegades.
Johnny Bentley is no come lately
either. He brings a powder keg each time he comes through the hole
either to block or carry the ball. Most teams are used to seeing just a
battering ram come through the hole especially against the Lawdawgs.
Not the case this season as Bentley has rushed for over 100 yards 3
times this season and opens holes for Wilson who has also rushed for
over 100 yards 3 times this season. Perhaps what is most impressive is
the fact that the two have done it twice in the same game and against
good defenses. Bentley who is actually a natural halfback has welcomed
his role as fullback and showed he can play anywhere you put him and get
the job done.
The two back has the same demeanor most of the time however often
showing opposite sides. Bentley for the most part is quiet and subdued
but can be known to be a heckler, while Wilson is boisterous and
outgoing for the most time but can often be caught in deep reflection.
However, the two share one thing for sure the passion for running the
football, and both would just as soon run you over then around you when
you meet them on the field.
The Lawdawgs hope to continue their
running success behind these two men and others like Danny Cannon,
Willie Farris and occasionally Tyler Trees and Ray Wilson. This weekend
they take on the resurgent Bruisers who are looking to finish their
season with a win and add to the Lawdawgs loss total. Due to the rainy
weather the Lawdawgs will be playing their final regular season game in
Garretson, South Dakota as they hope to clinch outright home field
advantage throughout the NAFL playoffs. Garretson has a beautiful
stadium and is home to brand new field turf. The Lawdawgs would like to
extend thanks to the Garretson High School and community for
accommodating them. Game time is 7:05 pm and the first 100 fans will
receive a voucher for one free side dish with the purchase of a meal at
Bob’s Café in Sioux Falls.

DIVISION CHAMPIONS
LAWDAWGS SMASH RENEGADES
40-14
September 16th, Weeping
Water, Nebraska – The Lincoln Renegades would have liked nothing better
than to interrupt the Lawdawgs quest for a division title Saturday night
and the way the evening started it looked like they’d have their way.
Just as the game started the lightning began to flash and although it
did not start raining till the 2nd half the thunder rolled
for the Renegades.
Chuck Wright would roll outside
contain and hit a wide open Tommie Williams when the Lawdawgs corner
lost his footing to go up 8-0 after the 2 point conversion. The
Lawdawgs would drive inside the 20 yard line three times fumbling away 2
of those opportunities and missing a field goal on the other before
another touchdown pass early in the 2nd quarter by Wright
would put the Renegades up 14-0. Just like old times? “Like a bad
dream. It was like the Nebraska Bears all over again” commented Coach
Taylor. The Lawdawgs would settle in after it became apparent that the
lightning was not going to stop this game, and began the task of getting
to work. “Three weeks off and weird playing conditions as well as the
Renegades tough play was a little too much for us to start. We knew we
were going to be okay though we were moving the ball fine and just had a
few miscues.” stated Coach Taylor on the sluggish start.
Settle in they did when Corey
Christensen hit TE Kevin Cumberland on a 5 yard touchdown pass cutting
the Renegades lead to 7 late in the 2nd quarter with the
extra point from Pete Peterson capping it off. With Mother Nature
providing perhaps an equal show to the cheerleaders halftime
performance, both teams agreed to cut the entertainment short and get
back to the game. That’s just what the Lawdawgs did taking the opening
2nd half possession 76 yards to tie the score with a 20 yard
run from Phil Wilson and the Pete Peterson extra point. The Lawdawgs
running game, with already impressive numbers over the past 6 games,
continued its dominance mustering 338 yards on 42 carries and a total of
5 touchdowns. In fact over the past 6 games
the offensive line has helped generate 1582 yards on 250 carries. They
had 263.6 yards per game, 6.32 yards per carry average and compiled 23
touchdowns. This was a season high for rushing yards outdoing
the 295 yards posted against the Minnesota Maulers. This was also the 2nd
time that the Lawdawgs had (2) one hundred plus yard rushers, with Phil
Wilson rushing 16 times for 132 yards with 3 touchdowns and Johnny
Bentley gaining 126 yards on 12 carries with 2 touchdowns. The Dawgs
own QB, Corey Christensen, was shut out again by their own running
attack. The running back attack forced Corey to only attempt 6 passes
all night, which has become a pattern over the past 3 games.
The Renegade passing fortune would
run into an ambush after its early success. The Lawdawgs secondary
would manage to keep their feet the rest of the night delivering
crushing hits and batting down balls the rest of the evening. Brandon
Thompson would record a team record 16 tackles, one more than Owen
Sandine’s 15 last year vs. the Bruisers. In addition, Brandon had 2
pass defenses and blocked a punt. It would seem every Renegade attempt
to get something going, Brandon was there to lock them up. The
defensive line did a more than adequate job forcing Wright to scramble
and rushing his throws despite only mustering one sack. Kyle VanEmmerik
had an excellent game with 6 solo tackles and a fumble recovery. Free
safety, Nick Hauert, had 5 solo tackles as well and Ricardo Sorrell also
played outstanding, recording 4 tackles and batting down 3 balls.
“I don’t think I’ve seen our team
play better in its history. I know a lot of the guys were in disbelief
when we were playing in the first half, due to the lighting storm. Once
we let them know we were not going home till the game was done, even if
it meant playing at 4:00 am, they settled down and got to work. They
came together and worked as a team to over come the adversity and the
odd playing conditions” commented Coach Taylor.
Passion was high in the 1st
half when being tested. It was the 1st time the Lawdawgs had
trailed since they lost to Des Moines earlier this year. 9 year veteran
Dan Ross pushed and urged his teammates with vocal encouragement and
Fred Mitchell played on a severally sprained ankle in the 2nd
quarter, still requiring double teams despite his obvious pain and
discomfort. As if in tune with Mother Nature opening up the rain and
wind, the Lawdawgs opened the throttle putting the renegades away with
the Wilson and Bentley one two punch, one after another giving punishing
runs.
The season continues to be the best
ever for the Lawdawgs as they go to 9-0 in the North American Football
League this season as well as 11-1 overall. The Lawdawgs remain
focused, however as the outright home field advantage for the NAFL 1
playoffs is a lock with a win vs. the Bruisers. They held the Lawdawgs
to just 7-0 at the half earlier this year. This would give the Lawdawgs
guaranteed home playoff games for the 1st 4 rounds. Only the
New Jersey team (8-0), with two winnable regular season games remaining,
could force the Lawdawgs to travel holding the tie breaker advantage
with points against.
That is a long way off. There
is not an easy out for the Lawdawgs this week vs. the Iowa Bruisers. In
addition, it would appear the Lawdawgs will host the 2nd
round of the NAFL1 playoffs and more than likely play the #14 (in the
nation) Central Minnesota Thunderbirds who are on a roll and have only
given up 24 points all year. They might have the best QB in the
country, Chris Esterley.
The Midwest Pioneers might take homage to that however being the #1 seed
and only losing the T-Birds by 3 earlier this year. Beyond that perhaps
lies the Hoosier Hurricanes who have knocked off one of the NAFL’s
elite, twice this season, most recently this past weekend 24 to 7.
“That’s all speculation though. We have to win this weekend to get that
1st home game in the playoffs locked in, and I don’t expect Iowa to lay down
for it” warns Coach Taylor.
As always
Wednesday night will be media night and the Lawdawgs welcome all media
outlets to attend practice at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds. Media is
welcome from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm. For more information on the Dakota
Lawdawgs or the NAFL please e-mail the team at

Not “Jackin”
Around”
Part I
Sept 6th, 2006
Salem, South Dakota–
In eleven seasons the Lawdawgs have not been fortunate enough to have
any SDSU Jackrabbits on the team roster. However, when Tyler Trees got
wind of the tryouts he just could not resist contacting the team in
order to secure a roster spot. Since then four more Jackrabbits have
joined the team following the lead taken by Trees.
Tyler played 3
years at SDSU in Brookings following a year at
North Iowa Area Community College in which his team went 10-1 and played
in the Pepsi-Sigler Printing Bowl.
With aspirations to go pro, Tyler is hungry to help this team prove it
can play with the big boys, and perhaps along the way get a chance at
the NAFL pro combine and All-Star game on championship weekend. Tyler
has been a stand out on a strong Lawdawgs defense locking down one of
the outside linebacker spots. Trees has compiled 49 tackles, 7.5 sacks
as well as 1 interception, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and 4 pass
defenses. In addition to being a royal pain in the opponent’s
backfields this “Jack” can play the other side of the ball as well.
“Tyler is a great athlete. Whenever we have athletes like Trees we try
to get them on the field as much as possible” says Coach Taylor. That
has been obvious this season as Tyler has carried the ball as a halfback
25 times for 80 yards and tallied 4 touchdowns. No stranger to carrying
the ball Tyler put up over 3300 rushing yards as a halfback at Belmond-Klemme
H.S. Over 1300 yards in his senior year and topping it off with 18 TD’s.
In addition to rushing in crucial situations, Trees has thrown 2
touchdowns and caught 2 as well.
With 2 huge games
on the schedule coming up over the next few weeks, Tyler Trees and Billy
Kirch took a few minutes out of their schedules to talk with the
Lawdawgs team newspaper to answer a few questions. Part II of “You
Don’t Know Jack” will be released on Thursday September 7th.
Lawdawg Leader:
Tyler what were your expectations coming into this season with the
Dakota Lawdawgs?
Trees:
Well....I wasn’t sure what to expect. I just wanted to
play hard and try to improve my skills while keeping in good football
shape with hopes of making it to a higher level.
Lawdawg Leader:
How's it going so far?
Trees:
You
can’t complain with winning. When you win it's fun, and we're
winning....but its been fun all season. I've met a lot of great guys
and made some good friends as well as playing at a high level of
football.
Lawdawg Leader:
Give us a comparison, I mean you did play D1 for the Jacks (South Dakota
State University). What was that like and is this similar in any ways?
Trees:
The most obvious difference is probably the speed of the
game. It’s noticeably faster playing at the D1 level. At that level
everyone can run, but when you play a team here, there's maybe 10-15
guys on a team that can really run. There's still a lot of big players
and the level of intensity is still high.
Lawdawg Leader:
What do you miss most about college football?
Trees:
You can’t match the atmosphere that surrounded the
stadium on Saturday nights or afternoons. You're playing for your
University and the state. It's a pride thing. I also miss the
teammates and friends I made in 4 years there.
Lawdawg Leader:
Do you get any of that feel here with the Lawdawgs and what do you like
most about playing for the "Dawgs"?
Trees:
Yeah, our fan base is a pretty close and dedicated
group. They're always at all the games. I just like the fact that I'm
still playing football and at a high level, giving myself a chance to
get noticed. I also really enjoy the friendships I've made with all my
teammates and it’s been a fun season.
Lawdawg Leader:
Most people don't know about our level and our team. There's a lot of
misconceptions. Tell us about your defensive teammates, could any of
them play for a team like the Jacks?
Trees: We
have a few that I think could and if some other guys improved their
technique and speed they could too.
Lawdawg Leader:
How about offensively? Do you see anyone that stands out on that side
of the ball that could handle it?
Trees:
I
think two of our backs and a few of our offensive line could.
Lawdawg Leader:
Tough questions huh?
Trees:
Oh
yeah.
Lawdawg Leader:
During your 4 years at State, could this team (Lawdawgs) beat any of
the Jacks opponents and if so, who?
Trees:
We
might have been able to stack up against Mankato State 3 years ago, they
didn’t win a game that year and last year we handled Wisconsin-LaCrosse
and Valporaiso pretty well, but they're still major D2 and D1 teams.
It'd be interesting.
Lawdawg Leader:
Toughest opponent so far this year?
Trees:
Cedar Valley Vikings and the Iowa Threshers have played us pretty tough,
maybe the Renegades.
Lawdawg
Leader:
So I see you play a little Tailback, tell us about that.
Trees:
Ha
Ha! Just an idea I threw at Coach T. a while back. I might have
mentioned I was a pretty decent Running back in high school and so he
gave me a shot. We have a great corp. of Backs, so I’m not needed
much. But I’m available for those tough yards or if someone needs a
break or gets injured, I’m ready!
Lawdawg Leader:
Looks like your Mr. "TD" to m. Having fun with it? Trees:
Yeah
it's a blast having the ball back in my hands again. There's just
something about playing offense and getting in that end zone. I like
the glory I guess!
Lawdawg Leader:
So tell us, what are the team’s chances as you see it so far? Are they
going to get booted in the first round like the "Dawgs" have the past
three years?
Trees:
Definitely not! Our defense is much better than in years past, and they
always say "defense wins championships", so we're gonna take it upon
ourselves to see that we achieve our goal of a championship. Our
offense is also very tough to stop right now and is on a roll. That
helps our D to play with much more confidence because the O is putting
up like 50 points a game!
Lawdawg Leader:
Tell us about the coaching staff. What are they like?
Trees:
It's
nice because they all bring a little something different to our team.
We have coaches that can be intense and get us fired up, and we have
coaches who have a more laid back style of coaching and are really fun
to play for. Coach Taylor is a little of both sides. He's a great
motivator and loves the game and enjoys coaching it and has fun doing it
at the same time.
Lawdawg Leader:
How about off the field do you like what the team is doing in the
community?
Trees:
Yeah,
I think it’s a great thing for our team and the city of Sioux Falls and
the surrounding towns. It’s great that we can give something back to
our fans and the community for all the support they've given us.
Lawdawg Leader:
We've covered a lot, anything we missed? Anything you want to say about
the team that I didn't ask you?
Trees:
Well
I really enjoyed playing along side my best friend and former Jacks
teammate, Billy Ray Kirch. We've had a blast and we kind of feed off
each other. I hope in the future other college athletes will come out
and give it a try and help the Dawgs move forward in the direction we're
headed now. With a winning tradition!
Lawdawg Leader:
One final question. Where is your focus now?
Trees:
I
think we are all focused on what we came out here in the first place to
do, win a national championship. I knew at the beginning we had the
talent to do it and now I'm sure we do. But I guess I'd have to say my
focus at this moment is on Lincoln for sure!
Lawdawgs “Cut Down” Threshers
46-14
August 26th Salem, South Dakota–
The Dakota Lawdawgs record is 9-1! As luck would have it the Lawdawgs
got off to a good start on Saturday night vs. the Threshers and never
looked back. The Lawdawgs would take the opening drive 65 yards to pay
dirt and Johnny Bentley would cap it of with a 5 yard plunge. Seconds
later Bret Gabert would strip the Threshers running back and Nick Hauert
would recover and put the Lawdawgs back on offense. This time Corey
Christensen would hook up with Matt Klein on a 20 yard pass to finish
off the 41 yard drive to go up 14-0.
The Threshers
would answer back as if to make a game of it scoring on an option run to
cut the lead to 14 to 6 when the extra point bounced off the upright.
However, that drive would be the only drive that produced any yardage to
speak of and the Lawdawgs would use their offense to chew up major
portions of the clock. The Lawdawgs scored twice in the final 6 minutes
of the 1st half to take a commanding 26 to 6 lead at the
half. Both touchdowns were on the ground, part of the teams 2nd
straight 200 plus rushing and 5 touchdown performances. Johnny Bentley
would score his 2nd touchdown of the night on a 12 yard run
and Tyler Trees would add his own touchdown 2 minutes later on a 7 yard
run that finished with a lung into the end zone.
The Threshers
made the most of halftime and promptly took the opening drive of the 2nd
half down capping it off with a great catch in the back of the end zone
cutting the lead to 26 to 14. This would be as close as they would
get. The Lawdawgs offense would take the wind out of the Threshers
sails with a nine and a half minute drive. The Threshers would not see
the ball again until the 4th quarter and would be looking up
at the 14 point lead on the scoreboard after Johnny Bentley capped of
his 3rd touchdown performance with a 15 yard run. The dagger
would come 4 plays later when Brandon Thompson soared up to intercept a
pass over the middle and return it inside the 10. Christensen would
connect with Tyler Feterl, a play later to push the lead to 40 to 14.
Lon Nelson would put an end to the Threshers next drive by intercepting
a pass, this would set up the Lawdawgs final score, a 15 yard run by
Austin Ingalls, who finished the game at QB for a resting Christensen.
The offense looked sharp and only had one hiccup, a tipped ball that was
intercepted in the 2nd quarter. Other than that Christensen
connected 12 out of 17 pass attempts for 150 yard and 2 touchdowns. The
running game continues to gel rushing the ball 47 times for a total of
227 yards. Those 5 touchdowns would give the team 10 rushing touchdowns
in the last two games.
The defense
continues to improve as well and Sean Dougherty continues to rip it up.
Adding to his team sack lead, Sean posted a solo sack and 2 half sacks
along with 2 solos and 4 assists. Ray Wilson also had a good night
posting 4 solos, 2 assists and a pass defense. The defense continues to
gang tackle, surround and swarm receivers and ball carriers. They have
again held an opponent under 150 yard of total offense and continue to
shine in the pursuit of team excellence.
The Lawdawgs
will be off this week to observe the national holiday and have been
informed that they will take a forfeit win on Sept. 9th as
the Minnesota Valley Warriors were removed from the MFL and were unable
to field a competitive team. Negotiations were in the works to have a
team replace the Warriors but no takers could be found. The team will
have to wait till the 9th for the win to be official making
them 10-1. Instead the Lawdawgs are planning a sponsor and fan
appreciation night at their team practice facility at the Sioux Empire
Fairgrounds. Details will be announced later this week. The
Lawdawgs will host media night this Wednesday the 30th of
August at the teams practice facility at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds,
in Sioux Falls. Media is welcome to attend practice from 5:30pm to
7:00pm. The Lawdawgs will be on the road September 16th in
Nebraska to take on the Cass County Renegades and then at home on the 23rd
of September to finish the regular season vs. the Iowa Bruisers. The
team will be taking registrations for a fan bus to the away game on the
16th. Fans are welcome to reserve their seats by contacting
the team.

Lawdawgs whip Maulers
39-12
August
19th Richfield, MN– Record 8-1! It looked for a
brief moment that the Lawdawgs might let there record get the best of
them as they fell behind 6-0 after a Maulers touchdown pass early in the
1st quarter. Billy Kirch would squash the moment with a
blocked extra point and the Lawdawgs would use that to build on. The
ensuing drive would see the Lawdawgs begin their running dominance to
put the Maulers into hibernation. In fact the Lawdawgs would use 8
different runners to compile 295 yards on 45 carries. Phil Wilson would
score the first of the Lawdawgs 5 rushing touchdowns on a 23 yard run to
put the Lawdawgs up 7-0 and the Lawdawgs would not look back.
Johnny Bentley would push the score
to 13-6 with a 1 yard plunge followed by a 3 yard rumble by Tyler Trees
that would widen the gap to 19 to 6 as the Lawdawgs two point attempt
would be no good. Cody Butler would punch in a 24 yard field goal to
end the 1st half scoring with the Lawdawgs on top 22 to 6.
“We were prepared to throw more but we just didn’t need to. Our backs
ran hard and the offensive line played almost perfect” comments Coach
Taylor. The Lawdawgs offense avoided turning the ball over and was only
stopped once in the game, by kneeling down to end the 1st
half. The 295 yards was the highest rushing total of the season an both
Phil Wilson (14-101) and Johnny Bentley (12-115) broke the century mark
in rushing yards
The defense settled in after giving
up a first drive score to the Maulers. There is no doubt they were just
taking a little time to adjust to the higher level of play than perhaps
they had been used to. The running game for the Maulers was
non-existent in the first half mustering only 7 yards and the passing
game was dormant as well except for the long touchdown pass on the 1st
drive. “We know we have to do better. This game gave us a few pointers
to work out before the Threshers come to town and what we need to focus
on to be a high caliber playoff team” says Coach Taylor. Fred Mitchell
continues to make it hard for opponents to get anything going since
joining the team 3 weeks ago. Mitchell posted 3 solo tackles, 3 assists
and 2 sacks as well as requiring double or triple teams most of the
game. The rest of the team would use this opportunity to gobble up
unprotected quarterbacks and running backs. Billy Kirch posted 8
assists and Sean Dougherty posted another sack as well as 5 assists.
Kyle Van Emmerik grabbed 1 solo, 4 assists and a sack and a half having
a great game as well. Tyler Trees had a sack, an interception, 2 solos
and 2 assists and Lon Nelson posted 4 solos and well as 2 assists.
Other defensive notables were Nick Hauert and Ray Wilson with
interceptions, Danny Cannon with 2 solos and 2 assists on special teams
and Brandon Thompson with 1 solo and 4 assists.
The Lawdawgs will be at home this
Saturday August 26th vs. the Iowa Threshers. The Threshers
are the only team to hand the Lawdawgs a loss this year although be it a
non-conference loss it still stung. “Our defense played horrible and
they played exceptional. We did not play particularly well on offense
either till about the end of the 3rd” reflects Coach Taylor
on the 24-30 loss to the Threshers earlier this season. The Lawdawgs
have rattled off 7 straight wins since that night pushing their record
to 8 wins and 1 loss.
The Lawdawgs will host media night
this Wednesday the 23rd of August at Whittier Field, in Sioux
Falls. Media is welcome to attend practice from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The
August 26th game will be held at McCook Central Football
field in Salem, SD and it is Dakota Camp appreciation night, where close
to 100 children that attended the Lawdawgs youth camps will be presented
awards. Competitions will be held as well as the Dawgs hosting the NFL
Pepsi Punt Pass and Kick local competition. KSFY’s Wavy will be in
attendance. Last year’s regular season game in Salem was heavily
attended and the team is looking forward to playing at their “home away
from home” again.

Lawdawgs Trample Thunderbirds
August
12th, Hardington, NE–
7-1! With the remaining 5 games on the schedule posting tougher
opponents the Lawdawgs made short work of the (1-6) Thunderbirds. Corey
Christensen opened the scoring with a 2 yard run to give the Lawdawgs a
6-0 lead and then would throw two touchdown passes in the 1st
half before heading to the bench. Marcel Byrd would be the recipient of
the 1st on a 39 yard pass and Austin Ingalls would scoop in a
38 yard pass and the Lawdawgs would lead 18 to 0. Willie Farris would
score his 1st of two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter
on a 13 yard scamper pushing the lead to 24 to 0.
The Lawdawgs would use 3 quarterbacks
in the game, using this opportunity to get needed reps for back up
quarterbacks and players that normally do not play a ton. Ingalls, the
Lawdawgs number two quarterback, would go 2-3 with a 31 yard strike to
Earnest Claxton to cap the 1st half scoring and put the
Lawdawgs up 30 to 0.
Christensen would see his final
action of the game on the opening drive of the 2nd half
leading the team on an 11 play 71 yard drive and capping it off with a 6
yard touchdown pass to Tyler Feterl. Corey would go 11 for 13 for 153
yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions in about a half worth of
work. Brian Ewing would quarterback the remainder of the game leading
the team to 2 scores, including the final score of the game in which he
ran 5 yards to pay dirt.
The Defense posted its 3rd
shutout of the year and played well against a Norfolk team that left
conventional style offense on the shelf and spent most of the game
attempting to run the wishbone. The Lawdawgs were up for the task and
welcomed the opportunity to work on a running attack that you need to be
prepared for but seldom see. The defense would use many reserve players
including seldom used 2 way players in key positions to work on being
ready for the upcoming tough games no doubt. Norfolk mustered 60 yards
of total offense on 40 plays, the bulk of which came on a miscue that
allowed the Thunderbirds to scamper 17 yards.
Matt Fey would post 3 solos and 6
assists with an interception, while defensive linemen Fred Mitchell
would wreak havoc with 3 solos and 6 assists as well. Tyler Trees would
tally 2 solos and 5 assists, while a gang of other Lawdawgs would
literally gang up on the thunderbirds for the remaining tackles.
Notables were LB: Deric Stahl with 5 assists, LB: Lon Nelson with 5
assists and defensive linemen Sean Dougherty with 1 solo and 4 assists.
Party time is over as the Lawdawgs
head to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Maulers. Perhaps one of
the toughest outs in the Midwest, the Lawdawgs are 0-2 all time vs. the
Maulers and did not play well in either game. The Maulers are a long
time dominate team from the MFL which is known for its tough teams.
This opponent has captured 5 MFL championships and has posted 77 wins
which leads the MFL all time. Game time is 7:05 at the Stardome in
Richfield, MN.
The Lawdawgs will next be at home on
the 26th of August vs. the Iowa Threshers. Depending on this
weekends out come the Threshers are the only team to hand the Dakota
Lawdawgs a loss to this point a 26 to 30 defeat in Des Moines earlier
this season. Since then the Lawdawgs have won 6 straight but will no
doubt have their hands full with the Maulers.
The Lawdawgs will host media night
Weds the 23rd of August at Whittier Field, in Sioux Falls.
Media is welcome to attend practice from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. The August
26th game is camp appreciation night (where close to 100
children that attended Lawdawgs youth camps will be present for awards
and competitions as well as Punt Pass and Kick competitions. KSFYs’
Wavy will be in attendance. Last years regular season game in Salem was
heavily attended and the team is looking forward to playing in there
“home away from home” again.

Dawgs Serve Law to Renegades!
Lawdawgs 26-6
August 5th,
Sioux Falls, SD-McEneaney Field
– 6-1! It wasn’t the prettiest game of the year but the Lawdawgs did
manage to get the job done Saturday night vs. the Cass County
Renegades. The Lawdawgs offense was not its 2006 self as it at times
struggled to move the ball and some of that credit goes to the
Renegades. However the same crispness was not there on offense which
slowed the passing attack for the most part. Corey Christensen would
hit Matt Klein on a 42 yard strike to open the scoring with 4:15 left in
the 1st quarter, the snap was bad on the xpt attempt and the
Lawdawgs win settle for a 6-0 lead. This would be one of the few bright
spots in the 1st half as the 1st and 4th
drives of the 1st half for the Dawgs will end with
interceptions one in the Renegades end zone and the other on the
Renegades 3. The Renegades also blocked a punt on the Lawdawgs 3rd
drive and had held the Lawdawgs to just 6 points although giving up 160
yards with just 40 seconds remaining in the 1st half. That
is when Johnny Bentley capped of the Lawdawgs most impressive drive of
the 1st half no doubt driving from their own 16 to the
Renegades 25 and Bentley would then bust open a 25 yard touchdown run on
3rd and 7. Going for 2 to put the Dawgs up by 14 would fail
and leave the half time score 12-0 when Billy Kirch would pickoff the
Renegades 4th down pass with time running out in the 1st
half.
As the passing attack struggled at
times the running game would take off. Rookie Johnny Bentley would show
off his skills posting the 1st 100 yard rushing game for the
Lawdawgs this season rushing for 153 yards on 11 carries. The team
posted it’s 2nd straight 200 yard rushing game as 8 different
other ball carries tallied 29 carries for 100 yards giving the Lawdawgs
40 carries for 253 yards and 2 touchdowns.
In all but one drive the Lawdawgs
either score quickly, missed a field goal quickly were forced to punt
quickly or turned the ball quickly all of which were un-characteristic
of this year’s offense. This forced the Lawdawgs defense in to spending
most of the night on the field. “We were up for the task” Beamed Coach
Taylor. “We struggled a little bit with our calls, communication and
execution on offense tonight and the defense was there for us. That
might be an understatement Lincoln tallied 59 plays however they only
mustered 140 yards of total offense.
Owen Sandine and Billy Kirch
attempted to match each other all night as Owen finished with 5 Solo
tackles and 6 assists, while Billy Finished with 6 Solos and 5 assists.
Although the Defense only mustered one sack ( S. Dougherty) , it was not
for lack of effort as Lawdawgs pressure helped force Lincoln
quarterbacks into 20 incompletion as well as 3 interceptions (Wilson,
Kirch and Chenoweth). Dougherty also added 5 assists to his sack, while
Brett Gabert turned in an excellent night with 1 solo and 5 assists,
Tyler Tress chipped in 2 Solos and 4 assists and Fred Mitchell also
added 2 solos and 3 assists.
The Lawdawgs head to Hardington,
Nebraska to take on the NE Nebraska Thunderbirds. There is a fan bus
scheduled to travel to the game. Package information is available on
the team’s website. Seats are filling up so call to reserve your spot

Lawdawgs ground T-Birds to go 5-1!
Lawdawgs 62-12
July 29th, Sioux
Falls, SD-McEneaney Field – The only thing hotter than the
heat might be the 5-1 Lawdawgs, winners of 4 in a row. Tyler Trees
recovered a Thunderbird fumble early in the 1st quarter to
begin the onslaught. The extra point snap went high and holder Austin
Ingalls made short work of it and hit Lon Nelson in the endzone to put
the Lawdawgs up 8-0, and they would never look back. The Lawdawgs would
score on 4 of their first 5 drives in the 1st half. Two on
the ground and two in the air. That was the only mixture however as
Christensen would go 10 for 13 in the 1st half for 208 yards
and 2 touchdowns before putting away his throwing arm at half time.
Phil Wilson who rushed for 72 yards on 7 carries put in the 1st
of his three touchdowns with 3:23 left in the 1st to put the
Lawdawgs up 15-0. The two ensuing drives would see Corey Christensen
hit TE, Kevin Cumberland, for a 12 yard strike and on the next offensive
play he would hit Tyler Feterl for a 48 yard touchdown pass. A long
pass from Corey to Matt Klein would set up Billy Kirch for the final
Lawdawg touchdown of the 1st half taking the lead to 34-6.
The second half was the total
opposite for the Lawdawgs, that is when it came to how the Lawdawgs
moved the ball. The Lawdawgs would run the ball 26 times in the 2nd
half, with no passes, for 208 yards and 4 TD’s. Using 7 different ball
carriers and mixing in different formations and plays the Lawdawgs kept
the T-Birds guessing. Willie Farris gained 69 yards on 11 carries and
scored on a 4 yard run in the 3rd quarter. Ray Wilson would
score on a 14 yard run early in the 4th and after a T-Bird
turnover Phil Wilson would scamper 19 yards to end the scoring for the
Dawgs.
The Thunderbirds would muster a 1st
half score after a great return by long time T-Bird Julian Carter. A
controversial pass interference call would put the T-Birds on the 10 and
Josh Davis would change directions to avoid a loss of yardage and
scamper 11 yards for a touchdown. Despite that run and score the
Thunderbirds would finish the 1st half with a total of
negative 5 yards.
More of the same ensued in the 2nd
half and even with 2nd and 3rd unit players
holding down the end of the third and the entire 4th quarter,
the T-Birds would not fair much better. However, they did manage to
make the most of 4 Lawdawg penalties on their final drive of the game
and when another pass interference call put them at the one yard line,
they would punch it in to seal the scoring for both teams at 62-12. The
Lawdawgs would hold the Thunderbirds to just 15 yards of total offense
in the 2nd half.
Defensively Tyler Trees led the
charge with 3 solos and 5 assists as well as two sacks, a forced fumble
and a fumble recovery that he took 34 yards for a touchdown. Owen
Sandine had 3 solos and 3 assists, while Matt Fey had 2 solos and 5
assists. However, the defensive line led by James Cunningham (2 solos
and 4 assists) gobbled up most of the tackles. Ray Wilson had 2
interceptions to lead a secondary that smothered Thunderbird passing
attempts holding them to just 3 completions in the game.
This week won’t be a cake walk as
the last two weeks appear to have been with the 2-2 Cass County
Renegades coming to town. The Lawdawgs have won 4 straight games vs.
the Renegades in the past, but all have been close and most going down
to the wire. Both of the Renegades losses have been non-division games
so this game has huge division title implications attached to it. The
Lawdawgs have not won the North Central Title since 1999 (the first year
of the NAFL). With the Nebraska Bears gone and the Kansas City Shockers
moving south to another division both teams are hungry to prove they
belong with the NAFL’s elite teams.
The following game after Saturday
night takes the Lawdawgs to the NE Nebraska Thunderbirds in Hartington
County, NE. There is a fan bus scheduled to travel to the game.
Package information is available on the team’s website. Seats are
filling up so call to reserve your spot today.

Game 5
Panthers D-Clawed as Lawdawgs go 4-1!
Lawdawgs 42-0
July
22nd, Kearney, MO:
– Corey Christensen continues to guide the Lawdawgs to a great start
this year connecting for two first half touchdown strikes. After Willie
Farris got the Lawdawgs on the board 6-0 in the 1st quarter,
Corey and the wide receivers corps would take over. Tyler Feterl pushed
the lead to 14-0 (after Tyler Trees punched in the 2pt conversion) when
he hauled in an 18 yard strike from Christensen. Corey would connect
with Austin Ingalls for his 2nd td pass of the half on a 10
yard strike. The Lawdawgs lead at half time 24-0.
The Lawdawgs picked up where they
left off in the first half by marching 68 yards on the 2nd
half opening drive to punch it in with a 1 yard run by Tyler Trees.
(Lawdawgs 30, Panthers 0) The special teams would score for the 3rd
straight game when Ray Wilson scooted 54 yards on a punt return turning
the game into a romp and putting the Lawdawgs up 36 to 0. The night was
capped off with Phil Wilson punishing Panther defenders rushing for his
first running td of the season to finish the scoring at 42-0.
The Defensive effort was
outstanding with the team posting its 2nd shut out of the
season. Billy Ray Kirch led the team with tackles, while Sandine,
Nelson, Trees, Fey and Dougherty, piled numerous tackles on as well.
The Defense recorded 12 sacks and did not allow the Panthers to cross
mid field. “This was an overall great team effort” Stated Coach Taylor
“We did what we needed to do tonight and put them away early and stayed
on top of them from gun to gun.
The Lawdawgs will host the revived
Norfolk Thunderbirds. Despite losing to the Bruisers this past week the
Thunderbirds are under new management and won their first game earlier
this season in 3 years. The Lawdawgs have never lost the Thunderbirds
so this years, “Charity Bowl” expects to be a good night to watch
Lawdawgs football. Game time is 7:05 at McEneaney Field, this Saturday
July 29th.

Dougherty
receives “Central”
Player of the week honors!
July
22nd, Sioux Falls, SD:
– In an overall great defensive effort the Lawdawgs won 25-10 over the
Cedar Valley Vikings. Defensive end Sean Dougherty earned himself Minor
League Football’s “Central” Defensive Linemen of the Week honors. Sean
had 2 solo tackles, 3 assist as well as 2 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries.
Dougherty is having an excellent
season at the defensive end position. Last Saturday’s 3 fumble
recoveries gives Sean 5 on the season, one returned for a touchdown. In
addition to those stats he has 5 solo tackles, 6 assists as well as 6
sacks for the year. Having played only one year at Dakota State
University, Dougherty has come to the team with a little something to
prove. With the Panthers expected to spread the Lawdawgs out this
weekend, no doubt the team will need him to continue on this pace.
The Lawdawgs will be at home next
week vs. the Norfolk Thunderbirds, July 29th at McEneaney
Field, kickoff is at 7:05pm. This game is the annual “Charity Bowl”.
The El Riad Shrine will be present
again this season and will again receive a contribution from the team.
The award winning El Riad Shrine chanters will sign the national anthem,
as well as the clown unit and steel drum band to entertain prior to
kickoff. The Lawdawgs are currently 3-1 overall 2-0 in league play.
Tickets are $8.00 at the gate 12
and under are free. As always Wednesday night during home game weeks
will be media night. Media outlets are welcome to attend practice from
5:30pm to 7:30pm to interview players and coaches.

GAME 4
Lawdawgs
win 25-10
July 15th,
Sioux Falls, South Dakota:
– The Lawdawgs jumped on top of the Vikings when Corey Christensen hit
Tyler Trees on a 7 yard touchdown strike late in the 1st
quarter, the extra point would be blocked giving the Lawdawgs a 6-0
lead. The Lawdawgs special teams would score for the 2nd
straight game on the next Vikings possession this time on a blocked
punt. The 2 point conversion attempt by Willie Farris was good and the
Lawdawgs would lead 14-0 at the end of one.
Pete Peterson would hit
a 37 yard field goal to cap off a 7 plus minute drive to end the 1st
half and the Lawdawgs would lead 17-0. Christensen would go 4-6 in the
1st half for 56 yards and a touchdown, however the Lawdawgs
running game would do most of the work in the 1st half.
Getting the first start of his career Willie Farris would carry the ball
5 times in the 1st half for 22 yards while a host of other
Lawdawgs gobbled up another 37 other yards. The mixture of ball control
running and timely passes was a good fit as the Lawdawgs defense would
harass and frustrate the Vikings offensive attack.
Billy Kirch and Owen
Sandine would both chip in stellar performances, Sandine would haul in 6
solos and 3 assists while Kirch would grab 4 solos and 7 assists.
Meanwhile the secondary locked down the Vikings receivers holding the
Cedar Valley Squad to just one first down in the 1st half.
The Vikings would only muster 33 yards of total offense while the
Lawdawgs defense would recover 2 fumbles and intercept a pass (Matt
Schmidt) as well as the blocked punt that was recovered for a touchdown.
Earnest Claxton would
catch a Christensen pass and take it to the two yard line where a bone
jarring tackle would force a fumble. Matt Gorter would come through for
the Lawdawgs and scoop it up and take it in for a 25 to 0 lead after a
two point conversion by Austin Ingalls midway through the third quarter.
The 2nd half would be much of the same for the defense, The
Viking would move the ball much better but stall out with a 4th
down incompletion in the 3rd, but the defense wasn’t perfect
for the Lawdawgs however, a let down would see the Vikings race a 52
yard pass into scoring territory and a 4th and goal from the
4 touchdown for the Vikings early in the 4th to cut the lead
to 25 to 7.
The defense
would mix in 3 sacks in the 2nd half and an interception by
Nick Hauert to insure the Lawdawgs 3rd win of the season. 3-0 in league
games and 3-1 overall the Lawdawgs will head to Kansas City
for the rematch vs the Kansas City Panthers. Although the Lawdawgs won
that game 26 to 14 the Panthers are not an easy out. “We need to keep
the momentum going and I’m sure the Panthers will be looking to stop
that” Points out coach Taylor “ We have a few things to work on from
this game but overall I’m pleased”
The
Lawdawgs game vs Kansas City will be followed by a home game at
McEneaney Field on the 22nd of July vs the Norfolk
Thunderbirds who are under new management that have pushed the T-Birds
off to a good start.. This will be the Annual “Charity Bowl” with most
of the gate going to support the El Raid Shrines “Childrens’ Hospital”
Last year’s game was a great success. As always “Wednesday” night prior
to home games will be media night. The media is welcome to attend
practice at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds from 5:30 to 7:30pm.
Players will be made available for comments and questions during this
time. The Game time will be 7:05pm and tickets are $8.00 for adults and

2 Dawgs receive “Central”
Players of the week honors!
July 14th,
Wauna, Washington:
–
LB- Matt
Fey:
Captain and 2 time NAFL all-star Matt Fey led the defensive charge with
the unlikely hat trick sacking Iowa qb Trevor Coxworth while striping
the ball and then recovered the fumble. That was Fey's 2nd
sack of the day and he threw in 4 solo tackles as well as 5 assists.
Fey is one of the captains on the Lawdawgs defense that held the Iowa
Bruisers to just 39 total yards on 35 plays.
QB-Corey Christensen: Dakota Lawdawgs of the NAFL. Corey had a
great game as the Dawgs beat the Iowa Bruiser. He was 14 of 19 passing
for 189-yards and had 2 TD's. The Lawdawgs offense ran 63 total
offensive plays compiling 352 yards. During the game the Lawdawgs would
have several long drives the most notable was a 13 minute, 10 second
drive for their first score of the game.
This week’s game for the Lawdawgs is shaping up to be quite the battle.
Both teams played similar type game statistically vs. the Bruisers. The
Lawdawgs posted 352 yards of total offense against the Bruisers while
the Vikings gained 365. On defense the Vikings gave up 156 the Lawdawgs
defense gave up only 39 yards. This game looks to be an even match up
on paper.

Game 3
Dawgs whip
Bruisers!
July 8th,
MANSON, IOWA:
– A few key plays including a missed field goal kept the first half
interesting but the Lawdawgs would get on the board with a 13 minute
drive that spanned the end of the first and 10 minutes of the second
quarter. After pushing to the 3 the Dawgs would be pushed back by back
to back penalties, before Corey Christensen would connect on an 18 yard
touchdown strike to Matt Klien. The drive would burn up 13 minutes and
10 seconds, using 17 plays to chew up 85 yards.
The Lawdawgs would use
9 different ball carriers compiling 117 yards on 43 carries and spread
the ball around to 8 different receivers while amassing 22 yards passing
on 21 passing plays. Christensen would throw another touchdown pass
this one to wide out Austin Ingalls; this drive would cover 70 yards and
burn up another 6 minutes. This was the 2nd half opening
drive and would put up the Dawgs 14-0 over the Bruisers. Ray Wilson
would score the Lawdawgs 1st rushing touchdown of the season
with a 2 yard run on the Lawdawgs next possession pushing the lead to
21.
The defense would
dominate all night holding the Iowa Bruisers to just 39 yards on 35
plays. The Iowa Bruisers rushing attack would muster 27 yards on 9
carries and the passing attack likewise struggled only gaining 30
yards. Captain and 2 time NAFL all-star Matt Fey led the defensive
charge with the unlikely hat trick sacking Iowa qb Trevor Coxworth while striping the ball and then
recovered the fumble. That was Fey's 2nd sack of the day and
he threw in 4 solo tackles as well as 5 assists. Former SDSU standout
Billy Ray Kirch registered 3 solos and 5 assists to go along with former
fellow Jack Tyler Trees 3 solos and 4 assists. The defensive line
played exceptionally as well lead by defensive tackle James Cunningham
who recorded 2 solos and 4 assists. In all the Defensive line 18
assists. “Any time you hold your opponent both of the board and under
50 total yards you have to be happy.” Coach Taylor commented. “We have
to recognize however that this team is 0-2 now and the Cedar Valley
Vikings (the Lawdawgs next opponent put up like offensive #’s as we did
tonight, and shut down the Bruisers offense as well.”
Special teams would
muster perhaps two of the biggest plays of the night in the 4th
quarter in a span of 3 plays. The Bruisers down just 21 had forced a
rare Lawdawgs 3 and out, and awaited a punt return. Things would go
array when the Iowa returner would be hit several times and fumble and
the Lawdawgs would go up 27 to 0 when Tyler Feterl would recover that
fumble as it rolled into the end zone. After the Lawdawgs went for two
with an injured kicker the special teams unit almost gave up the shut
out. Former UNI and Iowa prep school stand out
Alonzo
Clayton would bust free on a 92 yard return before being chased down by
Feterl on the Lawdawgs 3 yard line. With the shut out in jeopardy the
Dawgs defense would stiffen and force the Bruisers into a 45 yard field
goal that would be blocked, thus preserving the shut out.
This week’s
game for the Lawdawgs is shaping up to be quite the battle. Both teams
played similar type game statistically vs. the Bruisers. The Lawdawgs
posted 352 yards of total offense while the Vikings defense gave up 156
the Lawdawgs defense gave up only 39 yards. However, that as they say
is why they play the game, time will tell how good this years Lawdawgs
team can be.
As always
every Wednesday practice before a home game is media night. The media
is welcome to attend practice at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds from 5:30
to 7:30pm. Players will be made available for comments and questions
during this time. The Lawdawgs will host the Cedar Valley Vikings (1-1)
this Saturday, July 15th at Howard Wood. Game time is 7:05 and
tickets are $8.00 for adults and $4.00 students and children 11 and

GAME 2
LAWDAWGS
LOSE
NON-CONFERENCE GAME
TO DES
MOINES!
June 17th, DES MOINES,
IOWA: – The
Lawdawgs made a valiant effort to come from behind Saturday night
however it would not be in the cards falling short to the Des Moines
Threshers 26-30. The Lawdawgs played the first of 3 games that are on
the schedule but do not count to the overall league standings. Despite
the score being close what was not close was the Lawdawgs attempt to
cover the deep ball. “Welcome to the Lawdawgs secondary” commented
Coach Taylor to his players after the game. No doubt referring to the
past 3 season as the Lawdawgs Achilles heal was no doubt covering the
long ball.
The game started out in
hum drum fashion as both teams attempted to establish their dominance.
The Lawdawgs defense did this well early, showing that the running game
plan for most teams won’t be an option. The Threshers would make the
most of an attempted Lawdawgs conversion on 4th down and kick
a field goal early in the 2nd quarter. (11:17) A blown
coverage would be the spark that got the Threshers up by 10 when a
scrambling Threshers qb heaved a bomb to a wr that had drifted behind
the Lawdawgs defenders for the 1st of many deep balls. In
fact all the Threshers Touchdowns came on long balls that were thrown by
a scrambling qb. “We can’t expect our Db’s to cover for and hour
“pointed out Coach Taylor “At the same time we have to give credit to
our d-line as they were forcing the qb to scramble, we just have to
tackle better.” This is probably right on. If the Threshers qb was
wearing #10 and in purple and white he could have be Fran Tarkenton,
scrambling and avoiding tacklers as he went left to right and back to
the left or vise versa.
Down 10 to 0 the
Lawdawg seemed to be on the verge of collapse when defensive end
Marshell Byrd striped the ball from the Threshers qb and the opposite
defensive end Shawn Dougherty picked the ball up and ran 27 yards for a
touchdown with 0:31 left on the 1st half clock. Early in the
2nd half the Lawdawgs defense again showed that they could
dominate holding the Threshers at bay for most of the 3rd
quarter while the Lawdawgs mustered a 35 yard field goal by Pete
Peterson to tie the score at 10. It would seem to be a momentum change
until a 3rd down bomb by the Threshers would push the score to 17 to 10 with 5:55 remaining in the
quarter. With 1:40 remaining in the quarter the Bomb would strike again
and the Lawdawgs would find themselves staring down a 23 to 10 hole.
That is when the team picked up the pace. Billy Ray Kirch would ignite
the team by blocking the extra point; he would also block a field goal
attempt in the 2nd half keeping the teams hopes alive. The
“jacks” as they team has nicked named them (Billy Ray Kirch and Tyler
Trees would them join the back field and lead the way as Phil Wilson
would get on track on the Lawdawgs next drive. Tyler Trees would sneak
out and catch an 18 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 23 to 17.
Another bomb would get
the Threshers to 30, same play different time of the game. Scramble
left then right then,………… touchdown. The Lawdawgs would not be
disheartened, and the passing attack would blossom finally. Corey
Christensen would complete 8 in a row at one point but the 9th
pass would be broken up and picked off at the Threshers 4 yard line.
Christensen would finish the game completing 13 of his last 17 passes
and 2 touchdowns, hitting Matt Klein on a 10 yard strike to cut the lead
to 24 to 30. Although this final Lawdawgs score came with 4:22 left in
the 4th the defense would be unable to stop the Threshers
from running out the clock. Two third down and long passes and a 3rd
and long scramble would do in the Lawdawgs.
“We are still learning
to play together” Pointed out Coach Taylor “We’ll be ready when we face
them again later this season. The Lawdawgs will face the Threshers
again, later in the season and this one will be for the Lawdawgs books,
both will count for the Threshers. The Lawdawgs will also face the
Minnesota Maulers and Cedar Valley Vikings in non-conference games later
in the schedule. The main reason for the discrepancy in the games is
the Lawdawgs attempt to bring in a more competitive schedule for
marketing purposes. More games at home for the teams sponsors and fans,
and more on the level of other area “upper level” minor league
franchises.
The Team will Next
Travel to Fort Dodge
to play the Iowa Bruisers (last years NWI Bruisers) on July 8th,
before then coming home to play a non-conference game vs. the Cedar
Valley Vikings on July 15th at 7:05pm at Howard Wood Field.
All games will count in the overall AFA (American Football Association)
rankings however only 10 of the Lawdawgs 13 games will count toward its
NAFL (North American Football League) standings.
This weekend the
Lawdawgs will be off, however the team will be hosting a media day and a
booster pride night at its practice facility at the W.H. Lyons
Fairgrounds. Their will be a children’s’ games, flag football, and a

GAME 1
Lawdawgs Prevail in Season
Opener!
June 10th,
Sioux Falls, SD
– The Lawdawgs defense set the tone in the first half of Saturday
night’s game, Lawdawgs 26 to 14 win over the Kansas City Panthers. In
fact, the Panthers would gain only one 1st down the entire 1st
half, never seriously threatening to score. The offense would score
each quarter and used a balanced attack to move the ball.
The game opened with
the Lawdawgs driving into normal field goal range however with the hard
blowing winds the team would settle for a failed 4th down
passing attempt. Two plays later Tyler Trees would force a Panther
fumble and Owen Sandine would scoop it up for the Lawdawgs. The
Lawdawgs would make it to the Panthers 17 this time before an
interception would stop that drive. The Panthers next drive made it a
play longer before Matt Schmidt intercepted a pass and returned it to
the 27. This time the Lawdawgs would get to the 3 before settling for a
21 yard field goal by Pete Peterson for the first score of the year and
a 3-0 lead.
The remainder of the 1st
half would be much of the same for the Panthers. Nick Hauert and Jason
Quastad, would cut short 2 other Kansas City drives with interceptions
while the Panthers mustered just 44 yards that half. In fact, the
Panthers first 1st down of the half came with seconds left on
a 38 yard pass. Meanwhile, Corey Christensen would hit Austin Ingalls
during the 2nd quarter on a 15 yard touchdown strike and
Peterson would add a 23 yard field goal to make the halftime lead 13-0.
Both Teams struggled
in the 2nd half as the weather was colder, windier and the
rain fell a little harder. Not willing to die yet the Panthers would
score near the end of the 3rd quarter with a 45 yard QB
scramble to cut the lead to 13 to 6. Now a game that had been dominated
from the start was just a touchdown away from being tied. Quarterback
Corey Christensen would lead the Lawdawgs with their answer and hit
Marshell Byrd on a 9 yard pass across the middle to go up 19 to 6, extra
point blocked.
The offense would
score one more time with about 10 minutes to go in the game when Matt
Klein hauled in a 44 yard bomb from Christensen that would seal the deal
16 to 6. A scrambling quarterback would give the Lawdawg defenders fits
for the remainder of the game, however the Panthers would not break into
the end zone until 2:30 remained in the game. With two of the last four
K.C. drives ending in interceptions the Lawdawgs forced 6 turnovers.
The defense gave up a total of only 165 yards in the game, and everyone
contributed in the effort of shutting down the Panthers.
The Lawdawgs will travel to face
the Des Moines Threshers this week and will look to go 2-0. This will
be no easy task with the Threshers toting 3 former Iowa State Cyclones.
